What are your plans for summer? The long holiday offers opportunities for hanging out with friends, relaxing and enjoying some well-deserved lie-ins. It’s a special time of year, where the days and weeks extend in front of you, like a cat luxuriously stretching out on a rug. A time of loose routines, lazy days and exciting freedom.
But sometimes, having less structure to your day can be a bit… weird. It’s not that you miss school exactly (although you might!), it’s just that being cut loose from your comfortable routine can start to feel, well, uncomfortable. You might find yourself feeling bored, or stressed that you aren’t making the most of your time off. Or you could get FOMO seeing friends’ exciting holiday activities online.
In other words, you can end up spending more time in your own head. But the great thing about summer is you have tons of time to channel that contemplative energy in a helpful direction – by thinking about what you might like to do differently, and starting to build those habits. So ask yourself, is there any habit you’ve been itching to kick, or a new habit you’d love to develop? Maybe you want to start journalling, do more creative writing, spend less time on your phone, learn a new sport or skill or even drink more water? Whatever’s important to you, summer is the perfect time to work at it. And who knows, by September, your new habit could be second nature.
